The Creatures of the Night Book Tag.

This tag was originally created by YouTuber Katytastic and I was tagged by the lovely Zezee With Books here on WordPress. I’m not a huge fan of Halloween but thought I should do something on my blog in honour of it, and this is the only tag I’ve found that I really liked.

The idea is that you choose a book that has each supernatural creature listed below in it.

1. VAMPIRE.

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

This book is very different to the film. Hollywood went for zombies, but the creatures in the book are much closer to vampires, though Matheson never explicitly calls them that. I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I expected to but still thought it was good, and if you’re into apocalyptic stories I’d definitely say to give it a go.

The book also wasn’t quite as emotional as the film. 😥

2. WEREWOLF.

Her Vampire Husband by Michele Hauf.

I read this at uni for my Mass Market Fictions class and grudgingly enjoyed it. I was such a snob going in because it was a Mills & Boon and it therefore couldn’t possibly have any substance. I mean, it didn’t have any substance, but I did like it more than I’d expected to.

I’m glad it was a free ebook though. I’d have been a bit embarrassed to get it in a shop. As a whole, I find the paranormal genre silly. Does anyone have any recommendations that might change my mind?

3. ZOMBIE.

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion.

I didn’t especially enjoy this book but I genuinely can’t think of any other zombie books I’ve read! I didn’t hate this either, but there’s nothing pushing me to read the sequels. It’s a fairly unique idea though I guess.

4. GHOST.

This tag has made me realise I don’t read many supernatural-themed books, but the ones I do read must all be about ghosts. This was the only question where I could think of more than one or two books for the answer.

I always choose The Woman in Black by Susan Hill for these sort of questions, but I decided to mix it up and instead I picked Killing the Dead by Marcus Sedgewick. This novella is about a the ghost of a murdered student at a boarding school. I don’t remember much about it but I enjoyed it at the time, though it was a very quick read.

5. WITCH / WARLOCK / SPELLCASTER.

(So hard not to say Harry Potter for this one!)

I decided to go with Macbeth instead, which is my favourite Shakespeare play. The three witches at the beginning tell Macbeth he is destined to become King, and set the play’s events in motion.

Hubble, bubble, toil and trouble…

6. FAIRY / FAE.

The Faraway Tree series by Enid Blyton.

Silky the fairy is one of the inhabitants of the Faraway Tree. I don’t think I actually read the whole series as a kid, but I definitely read The Enchanted Wood and The Magic Faraway Tree.

7. DEMON.

I cheated a bit and went for Horns by Joe Hill. There were loads of books I could think of that had demonic themes, but none with actual physical demons in them. (I really wanted to talk about The Monk by Matthew Lewis, but that was technically all about inner demons, not actual ones.)

In Horns, the main character wakes up one day having found he has a pair of demon’s horns sprouting out of his head, and he can also make people do immoral things just by suggestion. He’s essentially turned into a demon so I’m saying that counts.

8. ANGEL.

So I have read one book with a demon in it, but I’ve literally read no other books about angels so couldn’t use Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman for the previous question.

This one is definitely due a reread. It was a really fun book about an angel and a demon who decide to work together to stop the impending apocalypse, because they’ve both decided they’re quite comfortable in the world. I was really pleased when I discovered this book and went on to read and enjoy some more of Gaiman’s work afterwards. (I’ve tried reading more Pratchett as well but have found out I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with his books.)

9. ALIEN.

I’m certain I’ve read another book about aliens, but can’t think of any, and I’m not even certain I ever finished this, but I’m going to have to go with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

I suppose technically you could also go with Cinder by Marissa Meyer? They fight a bunch of people who live on the moon so I guess they’re aliens?

10. SUPERPOWERED HUMAN.

Carrie by Stephen King.

This is my least-favourite of King’s books and I don’t really understand how it rocketed him to fame when really it’s quite a weird little book that ends pretty abruptly. I’m too scared to watch the film and see if that’s any better, though King’s film adaptations tend to be pretty good so I probably would like it.

If you’re looking to get into King, I’d recommend Misery, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon or Thinner, which are some of my favourites, or Cujo, which is the one I started with. He’s a great horror writer.
