1. An overhyped classic you really didn’t like?
I was not a fan of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. This is a staple GCSE text and I know a lot of my fellow students loved it (sometimes I wonder if it was just because it was so short) but I found this book completely uninspiring and have never been interested in rereading it. Maybe if I read it now I would get more out of it but I just don’t care enough to try.
2. Favourite time period to read about?
The Wars of the Roses, around Richard III’s rise to power (1400s).
3. Favourite fairytale?
I’m currently reading some original Grimms’ fairytales so my answer might change once I’ve finished the selection, but at the moment my favourite fairytale is The Ugly Duckling. I Googled it and the general consensus appears to be that this is a fairytale so I’m going with it!
4. What is the most embarrassing classic you haven’t read?
Wuthering Heights. I love Jane Eyre so it seems kind of obvious that I should have gone on to Emily Bronte after reading that, but I just didn’t get around to it. I have bought a beautiful copy recently though so will be getting my teeth into it soon.
5. Top 5 classics you need to read soon?
I’ll exclude Wuthering Heights since I just mentioned that. The 5 are: Dracula; War and Peace (Wonder by R. J. Palacio has inspired me to want to read this); Nineteen Eighty-Four (I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never read more than a few chapters); The Catcher in the Rye and Oliver Twist, which I’ve been trying to read for about 5 years… It’s just so much more tedious when it’s not a musical.
6. Favourite modern book or series based on a classic?
The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. This is a retelling of Homer’s Odyssey, which is another classic on my TBR list.
7. Favourite movie / TV series based on a classic?
Clueless! This is based on Jane Austen’s Emma.
8. Worst classic-to-movie adaptation?
The adaptation of Hamlet with Mel Gibson. An awful, boring film with some weird incestuous scenes that appear for no reason at all.
9. Fave editions you’d like to collect more classics from?
I’d like to collect the Penguin Horror editions (particularly Frankenstein), and also add to my collection of beautiful embossed Penguin editions (at the moment I just have Wuthering Heights and Grimms’ Selected Tales). I also am collecting Penguin’s modern classics editions. Basically I just love Penguin.
10. An underhyped classic you’d recommend to everyone?
The Monk by Matthew Lewis. So gothic and fun.
